Holy Confirmation

“Holy Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace. By the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #1285)

The age of Confirmation is determined by the Bishop of the diocese. In the Archdiocese of St. Louis, the established time for receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation is:

  • For children who were baptized in infancy or under the age of seven: seventh or eighth grade
  • For those baptized at the age of seven or older: during the Eucharist at which they are baptized, preferably the Easter Vigil, or Pentecost Sunday at the Cathedral Basilica
  • For those baptized in any Eastern Orthodox or Eastern Catholic Church: The Sacrament of Confirmation is not celebrated, since it was received (as chrismation) at the time of baptism.

Confirmation at St. Clement

For young adults, the Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated in the spring in the parish church. A meeting is held in January to present the program to parents and students in 7th grade. St. Clement offers a program of instruction to students who attend St. Clement School, St. Clement PSR program, and private schools. For more information, contact Barb Yoffie at (314) 822-1903.

For adults, the Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated at the Easter Vigil (for those baptized but not formally instructed in the Catholic Faith), or on Pentecost Sunday at the Cathedral Basilica. For more information, contact the Rectory at (314) 965-0709 about the RCIA program (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults).
