Where in the World?

1. Archaeological evidence of inhabitation of my city dates back to 3000 BC.
2. The Ohlone people were present when Gaspar de Portola, a Spanish explorer and first European to visit me, arrived here in 1769.
3. The Gold Rush in 1848 transformed my city into the largest on the West Coast at the time.
4. I am famous for my hills, cable cars, a large suspension bridge, and Chinatown.
5. Tourism is the backbone of my economy.

7. What city and state am I?

  1. From the ninth to the twelfth century I developed into a city state. 
  2. My strategic location at the head of the Adriatic made me a naval and commercial power in the tenth century. 
  3. The plague killed a third of my citizens in the early 1600’s.
  4. I am built on an archipelago of 118 islands connected by about 400 bridges.  The Rialto bridge is the oldest and most famous in my city.
  5. I was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.
  6. The Grand Canal, St. Mark’s Square, and Doge’s Palace are famous landmarks in my city.

  1. The Europeans settled me as a fur trading center in 1614.
  2. In 1857 I became home to the first landscaped park in my country.
  3. I am the most populated city in my country.
  4. According to 2005 census estimates, the five largest groups of immigrants in my city are:  Puerto Ricans, Italians, West Indians, Dominicans, and Chinese.
  5. I am a popular tourist destination due to the wide variety of entertainment opportunities, shopping, restaurants, and landmarks available.
  6. One of my most famous landmarks is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was designed by French sculptor, Frédéric Bartholdi. 
  7. I am often called “The City that Never Sleeps.”
