Martha’s Helpers

This organization was established to minister to those suffering loss of a loved one by providing a buffet luncheon at the home of the deceased (or other relative within the parish) on the day of the funeral. The premise under which this ministry was established is one of giving from the heart with compassion for those who are suffering their loss of a loved one.

When the rectory is notified of a death and details for the funeral are established, Father will ask if they wish our assistance.   If so, Father will notify Judy Maurer with a contact person to get the details of when, where, what time, and how many guests are expected to return from the cemetery.   Judy will notify each member of the designated team to prepare the dish and bring it to the home on the day of the funeral before the return of the relatives and friends from the cemetery. Depending on the number of guests expected, we will call one team for 35-40 and two teams for 50-70, etc.

It is difficult to determine how often each team will be called upon. We do rotate the teams so as not to burden any one person.

At the present time, we have five teams of 10 ladies each and a substitute list of about 12 ladies. It is sometimes necessary to call upon substitutes when illness or other priorities make it impossible for a member of the team to make her dish. The following day, at a convenient time for everyone, dishes will be picked up and returned to the sacristy at church, and placed on the shelf in the storage room marked “MARTHAS” for each member to pick up her dish.

We have a set menu for winter and summer and in this way, the ladies bring a specific dish each time, therefore, making it easier to have the necessary ingredients on hand at any given moment. As a rule, we have at least two days notice before the specified time.

If anyone is interested in our recipes, Martha’s Helpers will make these available on request.
